Blues Legend John Primer Brings Real Deal Blues to Greenwood

John Primer has helped build the sound of Chicago blues as we know it today. A three-time Grammy nominee and Blues Hall of Fame inductee, he returns to his home state of Mississippi on Thursday, October 8 for a full band show at the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

This is a homecoming worth celebrating.

A Mississippi Story

John Primer was born on sharecropper land in Camden, Mississippi, in 1945. He grew up singing in the fields and in church, dreaming of one day playing with his idol, Muddy Waters. He made his first instrument — a diddley bow — from broom wire, two nails, and a brick.

At eighteen, he moved to Chicago and started playing for tips on Maxwell Street, the birthplace of Chicago blues. He worked his way through the city's legendary clubs, playing seven nights a week at Theresa's Lounge and touring with Willie Dixon's Chicago All Stars.

Then, in 1980, his dream came true. Muddy Waters hired him as his bandleader and lead guitarist. John stayed with Muddy until his death in 1983, then spent 13 years with Magic Slim & The Teardrops before forming his own band, The Real Deal Blues Band.

The Real Deal

Over a career spanning more than six decades, John has recorded over 100 albums, earned three Grammy nominations, been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and received two Lifetime Achievement Awards. He's played with a who's who of blues and rock legends — Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, and The Rolling Stones among them.

For his Greenwood show, John will be joined by a powerhouse lineup:

  • Steve Bell on harmonica

  • Melvin Smith on bass

  • Quicksand on drums

This is a full band show — Real Deal Blues at its finest.
